Back in August of 2022 at the annual D&D Direct event, Wizards of the Coast announced that they were in the process of developing a DnD Virtual Tabletop (VTT), built using the Unreal video game engine and featuring detailed 3D digital miniatures and environments that fully integrated with D&D Beyond and the latest DnD 5e rules.
Over the past two years, Wizards of the Coast has slowly been revealing more information about the VTT, including offering a few playtests to select users at conventions and showcasing in-game footage. In early 2024, they also announced that the VTT was given the name of Project Sigil, later changed simply to Sigil.
Now, Sigil is finally here and available for download for PC on D&D Beyond. Notably, the features included in Sigil are much more limited if you have a free “Basic” D&D Beyond account, while “Master Tier” subscribers get access to far more. In both cases, however, the download is completely free.
So just what is Sigil like now that it’s finally here? Below, we take a closer look at all the digital details.

What is the Sigil DnD VTT?
Sigil is an online digital gaming platform developed by Wizards of the Coast and built using the Unreal Engine 5 (which is also used a number of AAA video game titles). The goal of the platform, according to Wizards of the Coast, is to create a highly visual and interactive experience that replicates the feel of in-person gameplay, with characters, monsters and NPCs represented as detailed 3D miniatures, alongside custom terrain and buildings, all of which use dynamic lighting, textures, animations and sound effects.
In an blog post on D&D Beyond in February 2025, Wizards of the Coast describes it as: “Sigil is a shared 3D VTT for your D&D games, allowing players to join your session, view the maps you’ve made, and control their miniatures. All features will be familiar to you if you’ve used a virtual tabletop before–but Sigil is much more than that. With Sigil, you will be able to create within a digital playspace. Want to bring your players into the grand ballroom of a Fey noble? Or perhaps you need a cluttered city street that will serve as a backdrop for a high-energy chase. Sigil offers the tools you need to create immersive scenes for your players. You can even create your party’s Bastion in Sigil so they can explore their stronghold in three dimensions and continue to build upon it as they level up. Like a massive box of terrain pieces and monster miniatures, if you can imagine the scene, you can piece it together in Sigil.”

What are the core features of the Sigil VTT?
Sigil shares many of the same features as other VTTs (such as Roll20 and Foundry), but its key differentiator (besides having the official the Dungeons & Dragons brand behind it) is that it contains detailed 3D characters and environments. Other features include:
- Dungeon Master Controls: The DM will be able to place, hide and remove virtual miniatures into the 3D online environment. Additionally, they’ll be able adjust hit points and stats, add conditions, notes and effects that interact with the game world and DnD core rules.
- Dice Rolls and Automation: As with other VTTs, the platform will automatically calculate savings throws, attacks, damage and stats. Alternatively, the platform also allows for manual rolling using 3D dice models.
- D&D Beyond Integration: Players will be able to assign their characters from D&D Beyond to a mini, which will automatically updates their stats and features for use in the 3D environment. Rules and content purchases on D&D Beyond by both players and DMs will also port over to the VTT (although it’s not yet clear to what extent).
- VFX and Animations: Sigil will also include a variety of in-game effects and animations, such as spells, weather effects and battle damage from a library of digital assets.
- 3D Capabilities: Players will be able to build detailed 3D maps that feature a variety of terrain, structures and features. In fact, Wizards of the Coast has said that Sigil could potentially be used to create detailed maps that can be shared with players during in-person games.
- Fifth Edition Rules Compatibility: Sigi is fully accessible with both the 2014 DnD 5e rules and the updated 2024 DnD core books.
- Miniature Builder: Sigil also features the ability to build and customize your own 3D miniature, similar to Hero Forge (although in the case off D&D Beyond, you aren’t able to 3D print a physical version of the mini).

When was the Sigil VTT released?
Sigil was officially released on D&D Beyond on February 27th, 2025. This follows an extensive closed beta testing period that began in August 2024, which involved significant amounts of player feedback and internal review.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t a completely finished project, and more updates and features will be added in the weeks ahead. There are also a number of elements which are not yet clear, including the extent of microtransactions and whether older DnD content will be supported.

How much is the Sigil VTT?
Sigil is completely free to download for D&D Beyond subscribers. That being said, the features change dramatically depending on the subscription level and whether you are “Base” user or “Master Tier” subscriber.
It’s also not yet clear how Wizards of the Coast plans to monetize the platform, although there are a few signs. In June 2024 for example, it was announced that users who pre-order the new 2024 Player’s Handbook are entitled to a variety of bonus digital content, including a 3D mini of the redesigned gold dragon for use with the VTT. It’s a sign that we may see microtransactions in the near fture.
There’s good reason for this concern, given that Wizards of the Coast’s former CEO Cynthia Williams once famously quipped that the brand was “really under-monetized,” while Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks also spoke of creating a DnD that could tap into “the type of recurrent spending you see in digital games.”

What kind of system do you need to run Sigil?
Sigil is currently available on PC. One additional technical element to note is that if you created a D&D Beyond account through Apple, Google or Twitch, you’ll need to also create a Wizards account to download Sigil. The specs are as follows:
Minimum System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10 64-bit May 2020 update – version 2004

You can learn more about the specs and installation on the Sigil FAQ.

How does Sigil compare to other VTTs?
Sigil enters a market filled with several established VTT competitors, including Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, Foundry and Shard. These platforms are incredibly popular among DnD players, with Roll20 alone in particular boasting over 12 million current users. All of the major platforms also integrate fully with DnD 5e rules having inked licensing deals with Wizards of the Coast or operating under the OGL license.
Sigil’s biggest advantage over these competitors, however, is that it integrates with D&D Beyond and has access to the Dungeons & Dragons brand and all of its associated content. This means they may be able to release exclusive products earlier than competitors (who typically license out from Wizards of the Coast). Additionally, Sigil uses 3D environments and characters, something which is not present in other VTTs.
Sigils’ biggest drawback however, is that is requires a PC to run and must be downloaded. Other platforms, particularly Roll20 (which is arguably Sigil’s biggest competitors), are web-based applications and don’t require any kind software to install, as users access them directly from their browser. This means they essentially work on any device (including mobile).

How is Sigil different from D&D Beyond Maps?
In September 2023, Wizards of the Coast quietly rolled out a new feature on D&D Beyond called Maps, which is a completely different system than Sigil. In fact, maps is a simplified, 2D version of more complex VTTs like Roll20. While it does integrate with D&D Beyond adventures, content and characters, Maps also has a fairly basic interface and is more akin to the Owlbear Rodeo VTT (in fact, it may even be more limited). The Maps product is only available to Master Tier subscribers on D&D Beyond, but has had a number of new features rolled out over the past few years.
It’s not clear what will happen to Maps now that Sigil has launched or whether Wizards of the Coast will sunset the product, continue to support it or cannibalize for use in the 3D platform. Notably, Sigil does have the ability to import 2D image files, which suggests that Maps may be obsolete.

Final Thoughts
The new Sigil VTT represents a significant leap forward for Dungeons & Dragons and the inclusion of new 3D assets and full integration with D&D Beyond offers a ton of potential. That being said, there’s still a lot we don’t know, including how Wizards of the Coast plans to monetize the platform. The current version includes only a few sample environments (known as “builder kits”) and miniatures, so Sigil is clearly going to be a work in progress.
That being said, what it offers looking amazing. You can download Sigil now for yourself on D&D Beyond.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story in the days ahead and will update this page with information as it’s made available. In the meantime, below is also from that official Dungeons & Dragons YouTube channel that was originally released back in 2023 showcasing the new DnD Virtual Tabletop in action.
